Why I Am Ashamed to Be an American While Abroad
I am about to get on a plane to go visit Russia and I will be honest the nerves are a little uneasy about the whole Georgia incident. It is odd to travel and not be proud of being an American. Thank god I speak Russian, so even if my accent will give away that I am not a native, at least it will not be obvious that I am an American.
What has this country come to, where now it is shameful to proclaim that you are an American. Here is a recap of George Bush’s presidency.
All data accurate as of August 15th
National Deficit is over 9 trillion
War Over Non Existent Weapons of Mass Destruction
I am sure there are plenty more things, but these are just the ones that popped into my head. If you want to contribute to this list please do, and site with a link.

@John Slater
Hey wage slave,
I never said it is all his fault what I am pointing out are some things that have happened during his presidency. I know correlation isn’t causation, but in this case one has to wonder.
Why is it that whenever someone (rightly) points out some serious problems, some right-winger always responds with the ignorant “you should leave” crap? Speaking up is the American way. If everyone was like Mr Slater 230 years ago, they would have all returned to England and maybe this country wouldn’t exist. Bush has been a disaster…that’s just a fact…and as an American who spends a lot of time overseas, I agree with that it has become very difficult. My suggestion to Slater…you should stay in the U.S….you would only embarass us and yourself if you went to another country.
First of all, the U.S. was never England’s to take. It was populated, and England decimated those people to take what wasn’t theirs to take. So, for any of us to claim we are “proud to American” is in effect, claiming to be proud to wipe out other human beings. As far as the fear of acknowledging you’re an American while abroad - it IS wise to be fearful! As for the right-winger advising you to leave the country and defending the Republicans - he needs to be educated. The Republicans have held the office more so in the past 32 years than the Democrats, so yes, the Republicans are at fault for the current reputation of the U.S. Bush should be held accountable for the current standing of the U.S. as he had a choice to change things for the better, but he chose to sell America to the highest bidder and fight a war on false pretenses. Our country has taken a nose-dive under his policies the past 8 years! Anyone who doesn’t see that is blind. Be thankful you can speak Russian. I’ll stay in the U.S. because I can’t speak another language…and soon, I’ll be hiding in the nearest cave because I won’t be able to communicate with “Americans” that only speak Spanish.
Alex,
What’s up? Cool meeting you and hanging out at ASE. Hit me up when you’re back in town.
To comment on the post and others who may negatively comment:
I can agree with Alex being that I myself lived overseas in Japan for 10 years, and experienced first hand how US policies lead to the change of positive opinions that other countries think about the average American citizen.
What is interesting about Americans is that they can’t separate distaste for government from distaste for country. They seem to think that they are one and the same.
This is not often the case with lots of other countries who are older, and have experienced the rise of tyranny and have a genuine distrust for their governments stronghold for power.
Pride has killed many countries, and if American’s arent careful, will do the same here.

You should move out of this country you idiot. Most of the things you listed are not President Bush’s fault. How did you get your job?
