Blockbuster Sucks and They Rip You Off

Posted by Alexander Tsatkin
July 29, 2008

I hate blockbuster more than anything right now. I used to use them back in the day when I was in high school and they were down the road from my house. I then went to college and haven’t though about them since. Maybe a few times during winter and summer breaks I would stop by and pick up a movie on my ancient account, but that was all.

The other day I checked my bank statement and noticed a charge from Blockbuster which resulted in a good hour of my life being wasted trying to find out what the hell that was about.

First thing I called my credit card to see if they have a little detail on their end. The lady was very helpful but said there was nothing more then an entry for blockbuster for $19.07.

Next I called blockbuster where the lady had a sweet voice, but was less helpful than my bank. First question I asked was what the account was set up for. Apparently it was for the Netflix knock off of receiving movies by mail and sending them back after watching.  Second question was have you ever sent a movie to this account. The answer was NO!

I am like if you have never sent a movie to this account then why are you charging it? I was told you get billed weather the movie is sent or not. At this point I am pretty pissed so I asked when was this account set up. The lady had the nerve to tell me that she can’t give that information out. I am like woman this account is under my name are you freaking kidding me?

She told me there is nothing she could do and I would have to call my credit card and dispute the charges. I told her to close the account immediately and called the helpful people at Chase.  They said they would only be able to dispute 4 months worth of charges, but I guess it is still better than nothing.

My theory is this. Blockbuster is a piece of crap and decided to somehow “auto” enroll me in their stupid online program. Another option is they gave incentive for those pimply faced teenagers that work there to get people to enroll. One of those freaks probably did it without notifying me, or better yet mumbled something incomprehensible in his pre pubescent cracking voice to which I agreed to without understand a word that left his mouth.

Either way this was absolute bull crap and I think its obvious I am not alone. Just google “blockbuster sucks” and you will see a ton of complaints against this POS company.

Lesson1: Check your statements “thoroughly” I used to just check anything over $50

Lesson2: Do not sign up for any “reoccurring” payments, because if you forget you signed up or stop using them, this won’t mean the company won’t keep charing you.

Lesson3: Blockbuster Sucks stay away at all costs

I’m going to have to come check your blog more often man , I miss your insights and (justifiable) rants :-).

One question though, how would they have your current billing information if it was an ancient account? I’ve never set-up one of these type accounts so I don’t really remember if they required a credit card or not.

Whats up Slobo, haven’t heard from you in ages mang.

Anyway, how they got my credit card info is beyond me. Maybe I did have to use it to open an account. Maybe I set up a credit card payment for when I went to the store physically.

I will even admit maybe while drunk or something I may have signed up. BUT here is the important part… I NEVER RECEIVED A SINGLE MOVIE.

This is the same thing that happens with stupid FreeCreditReport.com. Listen to then end of the commercial where they say something like “free credit card report available when you sign up for triple advantage” in that legal speak that you can barely make out. Those bastards sign you up automatically and you get charged 10 bucks a month without realizing it.

Here is another example from the book Gotcha Capitalism. You actually pay 4 times as much for home alarm system than you think.

Here is how… when an alarm is triggered who does the alarm company call. Your local Police officers. 9/10 calls are because of a false alarm yet it cost YOU the taxpayer $500 for every visit. The alarm company never has to pay a penny to the police force.

HAHAAHAH VIVA LA CAPITALISM
